DGDP Human Interest Story
Steven is a teenage skinny geek who plays the drums. He is also short tempered and makes sarcastic notes in his mind. He is a caring 8th grader who is a protector and bodyguard of his little brother Jeffrey who is suffering from Leukemia (a type of cancer) and hopes he gets better. He sees his brother having cancer a way for his parents to pay more attention to him than Steven. When Steven’s mom took Jeffery (Steven’s younger brother) to the emergency room due to his fall, both of them found out that Jeffrey had leukemia. When Steven came home from school his mother told him that he had cancer. His mom called her husband (Steven’s Dad) about Jeffery’s cancer. His Parents are in sadness, distressed, and they hope Jeffery gets better and care for him which caused them to pay less attention to Steven. They are also having to deal with money issues due to spending a lot of it with handling Jefferys medical bills, which were piling up like Rush Hour Traffic. Steven’s dad had to skip work one day to take Jeffery to Philadelphia and wasn’t happy due to him not being given enough time to get ready. Some people at Steven’s school feel sorry for him and hope Jeffery gets better. For example in the book it says, “Oh my god youve been absent for two (or three, or four) days and youre never absent. Is jeffery all right? Hes in my prayers. We all miss u!” This helped start a fundraiser concert for him and his family. The rest of the relatives also felt sad and sometimes come over. Annette and Renee came up with the concert for Stephen and his family. They have cut their hair short and Biff shaved his head due to Jeffy losing his hair because of his Leukemia. Steven also got some messages when he got home from his grandparents house about his flu and Jeffery. Family and friends matter when someone has cancer because you have support and people are looking after you. You also need to be brave and have good mental strength to feel more comfortable when you have cancer.
