Martin Luther King and Malcolm X
Probably the two most influential figures of the Civil Rights movement in the United States of America are Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, GA. He was an American Baptist minister and leader in the Civil Rights movement. Malcolm X was born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, NE and as Malcolm Little. He was an African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist. Their goals were exactly the same, give all African Americans equal rights in the U.S.A. and for everyone to be treated fairly and equally. However, the process of how to do it was much much different. Malcolm called for violence. King denounced violence and called for peace. In I Have a Dream it says, “We must not allow our creative protests to degenerate into physical violence.” In an address of a meeting in New York, Malcolm X said, “But if the black man doesn’t get the ballot, then you are going to be faced with another man who forgets the ballot and starts using the bullet.” Comparing and Contrasting Malcolm X was a well known as a Muslim and even joined an Islamic group in America but later became a Sunni Muslim and left the Islamic group which was known to cause trouble and later assassinated Malcolm for leaving them and causing much trouble in their group. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Christian and often did speeches in churches. (We do not own any of these images) Martin Luther King also tended to keep politics out of his speeches, for example in his I Have a Dream speech he never mentions any political party. Malcolm X though openly attacked the Democratic party. Saying that the Democrats promise African Americans equality in turn for votes but in the end they never sign up legislation to aid African Americans. In conclusion, this is what Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X did in order to help out themselves and their fellow blacks. There goal was the same, but their approach to reaching stated goal was different.
